How To Use Our Free Rhinestone Template You can use our free rhinestone template to create a solid heart shape. This free template works with any size rhinestone. The shape will be either smaller or larger depending on your choice of rhinestone size. For example, Preciosa Maxima Rhinestones 20ss measure 4.6 mm. Thus, your finished heart design will extend to about 101 mm by 110 mm (about 4 inches by 4.5 inches). Using size 16ss ( 3.8 mm) will give you a finished design of 83 mm by 91 mm (3.25 by 3.5 inches). Moreover, your finished rhinestone heart will also be larger if you leave space between the rhinestones. To recreate the heart design, simply count the red dots to see how many rhinestones you’ll need. For the pink dots, you have 2 choices. If you choose hotfix rhinestones, you’ll also need transfer paper. Rhinestone transfer paper has 2 pieces, a non-sticky opaque piece and a clear sticky sheet. To use transfer paper with this design, print out our template. You may have to enlarge the size so that the dots match the size of the rhinestones. Peel off the clear part of the transfer paper and lay it on top of the template, sticky side up. Place the rhinestones facet-side down in the dots on the sticky part of the transfer paper, filling in the heart shape. To glue flatbacks to fabric, we prefer Gem-Tac for its ease of application. For this method, you use the template as a guide. Begin your design by gluing the rhinestones along a center line, horizontally or vertically. Hotfix Vs. Glue on Rhinestones While there are several different ways to attach rhinestones to fabric, hotfix or glue on works best with this project. If you choose flatback rhinestones, you’ll need to punch holes in the template where indicated. You can do this with a Cricut machine or a hole punch set. Then, lay the template on your shirt and mark the placement of rhinestones using chalk or a water-soluble sewing marker. To glue rhinestones, place a drop of glue slightly smaller than the rhinestone on one of the marks. When you gently press the rhinestone into the glue drop, some of the glue should ooze from the sides. This creates a seal which helps prevent the rhinestone from peeling off. Continue gluing in this manner until your design is complete. Typically, craft stores carry several different adhesives. The best glues for bedazzling dry clear and are washable. Our favorite rhinestone glue for fabrics is Gem-Tac for its ease of use. Alternatively, you can also use hotfix rhinestones and transfer paper to make an iron on transfer. Simply lay a piece of wax paper over the template. Then, place the hotfix crystals on the wax paper facet side up in the spaces indicated. Peel apart your transfer paper and place the clear sticky part over your iron on rhinestones. Gently press down on the transfer paper to make sure the bedazzling crystals stick to the clear part. Once you’ve created the rhinestone transfer, you’re ready to adhere the design to your shirt. You can use a heat press or non-steam iron to activate the glue. Furthermore, heat activated crystals are great for clothing that gets a lot of wear and wash. Plus, it’s less time-consuming to apply the crystals. It’s denser, stronger, and clearer than simple glass. This allows manufacturers to cut more facets into the stone. Although it’s the most expensive type of rhinestone, it also produces the greatest amount of sparkle. In addition to material, rhinestones also have a different number of facets and arrangements. You can use crystal on any colored shirt or try another color such as red or black on a contrasting color. Next, decide whether you want to use hot fix rhinestones or flat back (glue-on) rhinestones. Both are easy to use and are a matter of preference. If you choose hot fix rhinestones, you will need either a hot fix tool or transfer paper. Glue on rhinestones will require an adhesive.  How to Make a Hot Fix Transfer Hot fix rhinestones already have glue on them. Using transfer paper with them makes the process super easy. Lay out the rhinestones facet side up according to the pattern. Peel the transfer paper from its backing and gently place the sticky side on top of the rhinestones. Gently press down so that the rhinestones stick to the transfer paper. Position the rhinestone transfer on your t-shirt. Heat up your iron to the hottest setting without steam. When hot, gently press down on the transfer holding for about 15 seconds. Pick up the iron and reposition the iron to another part of the rhinestone transfer. Repeat this process until all the rhinestones have been heated. DO NOT slide the iron as this may dislodge and move the rhinestones. Allow to cool for a few minutes and then remove the transfer paper. Your shirt is now finished. An alternative is to use a hot fix tool. As with the glue on method, lay out the rhinestones on the shirt and remove one rhinestone at a time to heat.  How to Use the Rhinestone Template with Glue-On Rhinestones Flat back rhinestones require the use of an adhesive. My favorite glue for fabrics is Gem-Tac. It is perfect for gluing rhinestones to fabric, dries clear, is washable and is easy to apply. Place the rhinestones on your shirt according to the template. Then, when you are ready to glue, pick up one rhinestone off the shirt. Squeeze a drop of glue just slightly smaller than the rhinestone in its place. Press the rhinestone into the glue drop. Some of the glue should seep out from the edges. This is necessary to form a seal which helps to keep the rhinestone from peeling off. Continue gluing in this manner until all the rhinestones have been glued in place. While hot fix rhinestone glue dries quickly, adhesives for flat back need to dry flat for 24 hours. How to DIY Rhinestone Jeans Attaching rhinestones to clothing is easy and simple once you learn the methods of application. The most popular method for attaching rhinestones to fabric is gluing. While you’ll find several suitable rhinestone glues, my favorite for fabrics is Gem-Tac. It dries clear, is washable, and the flow is easy to control. Plus, it works well with denim. Many people also like E6000 for gluing rhinestones to fabric. Although gluing is an easy method for attaching rhinestones, there is a technique to it. If done incorrectly, your bedazzling crystals may fall off in the wash. When gluing rhinestones, use a drop of glue slightly smaller than the rhinestone. As you press the crystal into the glue, some of the glue should seep out from around the sides. This produces a seal that helps protect the rhinestone from peeling off. Another option is to use hotfix rhinestones. These crystals have glue on the flat side of the gem. Heating the rhinestone activates the glue. Then when it cools, forming a strong and permanent bond. Typically, hotfix rhinestones are the preferred choice for frequently worn and washed clothing. Alternatively, you can use metal settings to attach flatback (non hotfix rhinestones). Metal settings hold rhinestones in place with metal legs that wrap around the crystal. Rhinestones attached with metal settings are very secure. Finally, you can choose the sew-on rhinestones to hand stitch the crystals to your garment. Additionally, you can glue and sew these crystals into place for a more secure attachment. 
Some Rhinestone Pattern Ideas for Jeans Now that you’ve decided to DIY rhinestone jeans, how do you decide on a design? If you’re a beginner, you can start with something simple. Jeans with rhinestones on pockets are trendy and very easy to do. Moreover, the top hem of the pocket can work as a guide to keep the crystals in a straight line. Another idea is to scatter rhinestones along the outside pant leg seam. Before you begin gluing, place masking/painter’s tape on the jeans to mark the placement boundaries of the rhinestones. Doing so will give you nice clean lines. You can also combine fabric paint with rhinestones for a mixed-media type of embellishment. One of the easiest ways to fabric paint is to use stencils. Embroidery and cross-stitch pattern books are usually good places to find designs Often, you can find them at your local craft store. Additionally, you can make your own. Simply print a design onto cardstock, then cut it out with an X-ACTO knife. After painting your garment, accent it with rhinestones to make your artwork pop. 
What Rhinestone Size and Color Works Best?
Most rhinestone manufacturers offer a variety of colors. Often, your choices are a personal preference. Typically, crystal and crystal AB are popular options that match everything. For an accent color, choose a complementary color that is exactly opposite on the color wheel. Likewise, the best crystal size is a matter of taste. Some people like to make a bold statement while others prefer a little sparkle. Yet, choosing a rhinestone size can be confusing since manufacturers use a unique method of measurement. Usually, retailers will list crystalline products in stone size along with the accompanying millimeter measurement. For embellishing jeans, you may want to use 12ss, 16ss, or 20ss. DIY Valentine's Day Rhinestone Ceramic Tile Plaque Known as the holiday of love, Valentine’s day is the perfect time to tell someone you love them. However, Valentine’s day is often only considered to be a day for romantic love but there are plenty other relationships to celebrate. I like to celebrate with my children, friends, and family as well as my husband. Whatever the relationship, a handmade Valentine’s gift is the perfect way to show your family and friends how much you love to them! Creating a ceramic tile plaque is a beautiful way to express your love. For this project I used: 1 ceramic tile (a wooden plaque works just as well) Red acrylic craft paint Paint brush Stencil (you can download a free template here) Clear Acrylic coating (to seal) E6000 12ss Light Siam (red) rhinestones Wax embellishment tool Craft glue Clear glitter  heart template opt inI always like to work with a template and you can download the one I used for this project here. Cut out the darkened areas on the template using an X acto knife and cutting mat or a pair of cheap embroidery scissors leaving small areas uncut to leave the inside of the heart intact.  Tape this to your tile.  Paint in the cut areas with a paint brush and red acrylic craft paint. Gently remove the template and paint in the missing areas. Allow to dry.  When dry, spray with a clear acrylic coating (I used Krylon brand). This keeps the paint from any damage. Allow to dry. I liked the idea of adding some clear glitter, so using a craft glue that dries clear, I mixed a generous amount of clear glitter with the glue. Paint on around the pattern using a paint brush. Allow to dry and then spray with another coat of clear acrylic coating.  When completely dry, glue on rhinestones using E6000. You can use the template as a guide for placement of rhinestones. The dots on the template are the places I glued the rhinestones. Squeezing the E6000 over a paper plate, use a toothpick to apply an amount of E6000 to the tile just slightly smaller than the rhinestone. Using a wax tipped tool or tweezers, pick up a rhinestone and gently press it into the glue. Continue gluing until your pattern is complete and allow to dry flat for 24 hours.  The clear glitter and rhinestones give this hand-painted ceramic tile the perfect amount of sparkle. Have a specific person in mind?
